How does a solar shower work?

Warning: The water inside the shower unit can get quite hot, so ensure you test it before using it and ensure children are supervised.

These solar showers have a water compartment inside them - this is filled with water using a standard garden hose. The compartment fills from the bottom upwards. When left in the sun, the heat energy from the sun warms up the water inside the shower unit. This will usually take 3-6 hours, depending on the outside temperature and the initial water temperature.

When you are ready to take a shower, turn on the garden hose to feed cold water into the system. The water pressure from your garden hose entering the bottom of the chamber pushes the warm water out through the top into the shower head. The mixer control enables you to blend the incoming cold water from the garden hose with the warm water inside the shower chamber - enabling you to set the temperature to a comfortable level.

Always ensure you test the water temperature before entering the shower.

There is no solar panel for generating electricity and no electric heater element. The heating is provided entirely by the passive heat energy of the sun heating the water inside the shower unit.

SAFETY WARNING

In hot weather, water temperatures can rise higher than you may expect, so ensure you test water temperature before showering. As you would in a normal shower, use the mixer to blend cold water with the warm water in your shower to get the water to a comfortable temperature. Supervise children at all times.
