An ice bath is a recovery practice where an individual immerses their body in cold water, typically between 50-59°F (10-15°C), for a short duration, usually around 10-15 minutes. The cold temperature helps to reduce inflammation, numb soreness, and constrict blood vessels, which can aid in the recovery of muscles after intense physical activity. Ice baths are commonly used by athletes to speed up recovery and reduce muscle soreness after strenuous exercise or competition.
A study published on the National Library of Medicine is titled "Impact of Cold-Water Immersion Compared with Passive Recovery Following a Single Bout of Strenuous Exercise on Athletic Performance in Physically Active Participants"
The study concluded that CWI (cold water immersion) "was an effective recovery tool after high-intensity exercise, with positive outcomes occurring for muscular power, muscle soreness, CK, and perceived recovery 24 h after exercise."
