What is a spa heat pump?

A spa heat pump is a device that heats the water in your spa pool or swim spa using a much more energy-efficient method. Physically it will look like a box approx 900mm x 500mm x 700mm with a large fan on the side of it and it will need to be located within 3m of your spa pool or swim spa. 

A spa heat pump can reduce your spa heating costs by up to 75%, meaning that it can pay for itself in energy-savings in as little as 2 years.

A spa or pool heat pump can help you enjoy your spa or pool longer into the cooler seasons without costing an arm and a leg in heating costs! We might be biased, but we think there’s nothing more relaxing than relaxing in warm water under the stars on a winter night!

How much does a spa heat pump cost?

If you’re wondering about a spa heat pump price, then you have come to the right place.

Spa heat pumps in Australia can cost anywhere from around $1,200 up to $4,000 for a portable or medium sized spa pool. For a larger swim spa, a 12kW will cost around 5,000.

You will need to allow for additional installation costs for an electrician and a spa technician or plumber to complete the installation. Electrician costs for electrical wiring on a heat pump should cost around $150-$250 depending on your location and the wiring setup at your home. Plumbing and connection costs with a spa technician should cost around $300 - $400 depending on your location and the plumbing setup on your existing spa.

How does a spa pool heat pump work?

A spa heat pump operates using the same technology as a refrigerator, except in reverse! Using a fan, the heat pump draws in ambient air from the surroundings, this air circulates through a coil that absorbs some heat energy from the air using the principle of evaporation.

This heat energy warms a refrigerant in the coil which then converts from a liquid to a gas as it warms. The warm refrigerant gas is then pumped through a compressor which pressurises the refrigerant. As the refrigerant becomes compressed, it heats up further and may reach up to 90° Celcius. 

Water from your spa is then pumped into a small chamber containing a condenser coil. The hot gas is pumped through the condenser coil, which then heats the water inside the chamber as it passes through. As the cooler water from your spa is pumped through, heat energy is transferred from the hot refrigerant gas into the water.

After transferring heat energy to the water, refrigerant gas cools back down and reverts to a liquid state. 

The process then begins again as the fan blows out cool air and draws in another batch of warm ambient air.

The answer is: It depends! There are a few variables that will impact your decision as you consider the best spa pool heat pump for your property.

1. The size of your spa. 

Use the guide below to help select the appropriate kilowatt output that you will need to effectively heat your spa.

2. Existing equipment and electronics in your spa 

If you have a SpaNet® SV series controller in your spa you can use a SpaNet® SV series heat pump which will interface directly with your spa controller. This means you can adjust the temperature directly from the touchpad on your spa or even monitor and adjust temperature remotely from a mobile device if you have the SmartLink Wifi unit installed.

This will also mean your spa controller operates intelligently to turn the heating on at the most efficient time.

If your spa doesn’t have an SV controller, you can still use one of the SpaNet® Powersmart series heat pumps or one of the SensaHeat inverter heat pumps.

3. Your location and warm up time preference

If you live in a colder location you may choose to go for a heat pump with larger heating capacity to enable your spa to heat up more quickly.
