What chemicals do I need for my spa pool or swim spa (Australia)

There’s nothing more inviting than a warm spa at the end of a long day. That’s what bacteria think too - warm water can be a breeding ground for various micro-organisms! In order to ensure a safe and enjoyable spa experience, you will need to use a selection of spa chemicals and water care products to maintain your spa. 

Make sure Mr. Bacteria and Ms. Micro-Organism are not on the guest list for your spa party!

• Spa Sanitiser: An approved sanitiser will help kill bacteria in your spa pool. Most popular sanitisers include chlorine, hydrogen peroxide or lithium. We don’t recommend using bromine as it is corrosive and can damage the components in your spa. 
• Spa Shock: You should also use a spa shock product periodically which helps break down organic material in your spa which can build up after heavy use. 
• Water balance chemicals are required to help keep the pH and alkalinity in your spa water within the correct range. These include pH decreasers and alkalinity increasers.
• Water Clarifiers: Other chemicals for your spa include anti-foam, clarifiers and pipe degreasers which can all help keep your spa water crystal clear and sparkling.
• Cleaning Chemicals: From time to time you’ll also need to use various cleaning products such as filter cleaning chemicals, and specialised cleaners for your spa cover and spa shell.

Can I use a spa without chemicals?

But what you are probably wondering is - can I run a spa without adding anything other than water? The answer is no - you will need to add various water care products to maintain the water quality. You’ll find it only takes a few days for algae and various other organisms to build up in your spa without the use of appropriate water treatment products.

What is spa sanitiser and why do I need it?

Spa sanitisers are essential for maintaining the cleanliness and hygiene of the spa water. When multiple individuals use a spa, bacteria, viruses, and other contaminants can be introduced into the water. This can lead to poor water quality, cloudiness and at worst, infections and illnesses. Spa sanitisers, such as chlorine, hydrogen peroxide or lithium, can effectively kill harmful microorganisms and prevent the growth of algae and bacteria in the water. 

What is Chlorine Spa Sanitiser or ‘Dichlor’?

Dichlor, also known as dichloroisocyanuric acid, is a popular spa sanitiser that is commonly used in the form of granules or tablets. When dichlor is added to spa water, it dissolves and releases chlorine, which acts as a powerful disinfectant. The chlorine in dichlor effectively kills bacteria, viruses, and other harmful microorganisms in the water, helping to maintain water hygiene. Additionally, dichlor also contains a stabilizing agent that helps prevent chlorine degradation from UV light exposure, allowing it to remain effective for a longer period of time.

Hydrogen peroxide spa sanitiser

Hydrogen peroxide is an alternative sanitiser that can be used in spas. It works by breaking down into water and oxygen when it comes into contact with organic matter such as bacteria and algae. The oxygen produced acts as a powerful oxidiser, effectively killing bacteria and other microorganisms in the water. Hydrogen peroxide is often used as a non-chlorine sanitiser option for individuals who may be sensitive or allergic to chlorine. 

Lithium hypochlorite spa sanitiser

Lithium hypochlorite is a type of spa sanitiser that is highly effective in killing bacteria, viruses, and other harmful contaminants in spa water. When added to the spa, lithium hypochlorite dissolves and releases chlorine, which acts as a powerful disinfectant. Chlorine works by attacking and destroying the cell walls of microorganisms, effectively killing them and preventing their growth. This helps to maintain the cleanliness and hygiene of the spa water. 

Can I run a chlorine-free spa?

Yes, there are alternatives to chlorine that you can use to sanitise your spa pool.

The most effective chlorine-free sanitiser is hydrogen peroxide which is a powerful oxidizer that can effectively kill bacteria, viruses, and algae that may be present in the water. Unlike chlorine, hydrogen peroxide does not produce strong odours or cause skin and eye irritations, making it a suitable option for individuals with sensitivities or allergies. Additionally, hydrogen peroxide breaks down into water and oxygen, leaving no harmful chemical byproducts or residues in the water. This makes it a more environmentally friendly choice for maintaining water quality in a spa pool.

Hydrogen peroxide can be a little more difficult to manage than chlorine if you are not able to dose consistently. If you follow the dosing instructions carefully and accurately, hydrogen peroxide offers an effective, gentle, and safe option for maintaining clean and healthy water.

Some people use bromine as a sanitiser, but we don't recommend it because it is more corrosive and can damage the components in your spa.

Enzyme and mineral treatments can be used as part of a combined water treatment system alongside another sanitiser in a spa pool. Enzymes can assist in breaking down organic matter and reducing the workload on chlorine or bromine, helping to improve water clarity and reduce the formation of unpleasant odours.

Enzymes alone are not effective at eliminating living organisms, which is why they should be used in conjunction with an approved sanitising system. Additionally, unlike chlorine, there is no straightforward test to determine the concentration of enzyme treatment in the water, making it challenging to determine when additional treatment is needed. Therefore, while enzyme treatments can be a valuable supplementary option, they are not recommended as a standalone alternative to chlorine or bromine due to their limited ability to kill living organisms.

In our nearly 40 years of selling spa pools and swim spas, we have found chlorine sanitiser to be the most effective at killing bacteria and maintaining water quality. However, if you want to run a chlorine-free spa there are certainly good alternatives available.

What is spa shock?

Spa shock refers to a specific type of chemical used in spas to oxidise and sanitise the water. MPS spa shock, also known as Mono Persulfate is commonly supplied in the form of a granular substance that is added to the spa water. The main purpose of spa shock is to rapidly eliminate any lingering organic matter, oils, sweat, or other substances that can build up in the water over time. 

Spa shock also helps to clarify the water, removing any cloudiness or discolouration. It is typically used on a regular basis, such as weekly or after heavy usage, to maintain water clarity and sanitisation.

How to balance spa chemicals

• Test the water using a reliable water testing kit
• Adjust pH levels using pH increaser or pH decreaser to the ideal range (7.2-7.8)
• Adjust alkalinity levels using an alkalinity increaser or decreaser (Ideal range 100-120ppm)
• Adjust calcium hardness levels using a calcium hardness increaser or sequestrant
• Check and adjust sanitiser levels according to the recommended range
• Regularly test and adjust chemical levels as needed

How do I put spa chemicals in my spa or swim spa?

Adding spa chemicals to your spa or swim spa is a straightforward process, but it's essential to follow the manufacturer's instructions on the specific product you're using. Here's a general step-by-step guide on how to add spa chemicals:

• Read the chemical product label and instructions for the correct dosage
• Wear safety gear if recommended.
• Turn off spa equipment.
• Scoop a bucket of water from your spa
• Measure the exact dose and dissolve into the bucket, then gently distribute in the middle of your spa
• Wait per product instructions, then turn spa equipment back on
• Maintain regular water testing and adjustment.

Can I use pool chemicals in my spa?

Using pool chemicals in a spa is generally not recommended. While both pools and spas require similar types of chemicals for water maintenance, there are some key differences in water chemistry and concentration levels that make it important to use products specifically designed for spas. Here's why:

• Spas have warmer water temperatures: Spa chemicals are specifically designed to operate in the warmer water temperatures of a spa or swim spa. Pool chemicals may not work correctly as they are designed for cooler water temperatures.
• Spas are smaller than pools: Spa pools have a much smaller water volume than pools, pool chemicals are formulated for larger bodies of water and the concentration may not be correct for your spa

To ensure the safety, comfort, and proper functioning of your spa, it's best to use chemicals specifically designed for spas. These products are readily available at pool and spa supply stores and are labelled as "spa" or "hot tub" chemicals. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions for dosing and maintenance to keep your spa water balanced and safe.
